Get on the bus


The two largest unions of the Ypsilanti Public School District packed a school bus with the donations of students from all the district’s schools on the Saturday be-fore Thanksgiving to make sure area families were fed.

Board hears presentation from club

The Ypsilanti Public Schools Board of Education met last week to approve contracts and acknowledge honorees. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance being led by school children from Estabrook Elementary and Murl Eastman, a veteran of the Pacific Ocean Theater in World War II.

Ypsilanti Public Schools is a 24/7 smoke free campus and thanks to a $500 contribution from the Ypsilanti Health Coalition, the public will have a visual reminder of the district's no smoking policy. Ten signs imprinted with the message "Ypsilanti Public Schools is a Smoke-Free Environment" were purchased and will be installed at various locations throughout the district.

Every Week at YPS

Message on the move: YPS is once again participating with the "Tie One On" Campaign which began Monday and runs through the holidays. The district's Safe Schools Program in cooperation with Mothers Against Drunk Driving is sponsoring the initaitive and is distributing red ribbons to tie on vehicle antennas, side mirrors or door handles. This is a visual reminder not to drink and drive.

What a difference a night can make.

Police Beat

Ypsilanti police officers Zachary Allen and Bradley Compton were patrolling in the vicinity of East Michigan Avenue and Miles Street last Saturday when they observed a man walking eastbound. As they approached the man, they saw him throw a baggie onto the ground. The officers, who act as the neighborhood policing team for that area, retrieved the baggie, which was found to contain eight rocks of crack cocaine. The man was arrested.
